Therapy

Craniosacral therapy (CST) was developed about 30 years ago by John Upledger, DO. Dr. Upledger originally studied the practice of cranial osteopathy, which was developed by William Sutherland, DO in the twentieth century, but adapted it based on his own research and personal observation during his career as an osteopathic physician.

Craniosacral therapy is based on several theories. The first is that the skull bones do not fuse completely in early childhood as perceived. In addition, career Dr. Upledger observed, while attendance during a surgical procedure, the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord – the meninges – actually move rhythmically. At first it was thought that this rate was due to the heartbeat, but Dr. Upledger discovered that the pace of the meninges, is a different pattern of the heartbeat.

Craniosacral therapists are taught to identify and assess the movement of the meninges with just keeping the head and base of the spine – sacrum – very quiet and focus on what they feel with the fingers and hand. After evaluation, it is possible to very slowly and gently "adjust" skull bones, so that the cerebrospinal fluid – the fluid that bathes the brain and spinal cord – can flow more naturally.

Craniosacral therapy is used for a wide range of symptoms including neck pain, backaches, chronic fatigue, temporomandibular joint syndrome, fibromyalgia and even emotional problems like depression and anxiety. Especially good for chronic conditions that may have a neurological component, such as problems coordination, hyperactivity and learning disorders. It has even been used to treat autism, Dr. Upledger has found that the meninges of autistic children are remarkably firmer, it is possible to drop during treatment of the CST.

Craniosacral therapy is performed with the client lying on a stretcher while the therapist supports the head and / or sacrum. The therapist's hands, then move slightly to make the necessary adjustment. It may feel like much was happening during treatment, the therapist must maintain his concentration, so do not talk much and the customer, because they do not move much themselves, they can sleep. The effects are subtle and can take a lot of sensitivity to notice at first.

And what are the effects? To begin, the client can observe that are quieter and can concentrate more easily. His posture and coordination can be improved and may have less pain, maybe that persistent headache had gone. Or maybe feel more optimistic about life in general. The problems in your life that have been a source of anxiety no longer seems so difficult – and difficult to overcome. (Because it has a wide range of benefits, the CST can be used in conjunction with other treatments, including emotional processing.)

Craniosacral therapy can help people of all ages, from babies to elderly. About the only time he is definitely not recommended is when there is a high risk condition situated on or affecting the brain or spinal cord, such as an aneurysm or intracranial hemorrhage. The craniosacral therapist obtain a medical history and may consult with a physician or other professional before to treatment.

Craniosacral therapy can be practiced by massage therapists, but it is the massage. It can be done by osteopathic physicians, but not is an osteopathic adjustment. Special training is required to make this work. But many people – professionals and clients – trust it and never try any thing more.
