Unfortunately, children also suffer from anxiety disorders. Unlike adults, the treatment options available for children who suffer from Anxiety is very limited. This is especially true for anti-anxiety medication.

Somehow, not anti-anxiety medication is compatible with children. The same drug that is used successfully to treat anxiety disorders in adults is not prescribed to children suffering the same problems.

1. Prescribed only if necessary

The National Institute of Mental Health has advised doctors to exercise great care in prescribing drugs anxiety for children. To the extent possible, other types of therapy should be tried, and often, doctors prescribe therapies instead of drugs safer anti-anxiety for children. If medication is absolutely necessary, the physician has an obligation to carefully weigh the pros and cons of treatment.

Keep in mind that children do not respond to medication for anxiety, as well as adults. This is because the bodies of young children are contantly growing and development and therefore react differently to medication.

Even in cases in which medication is prescribed for children, the dose will different. If you are prescribed addictive drugs, doctors usually monitor the young patient carefully during the time he or she is on medication. Usually, Doctors urge younger patients taking other kinds of therapy such as psychotherapy, which is much safer.

Although most physicians prefer to treat young children suffering from anxiety disorders without drugs, severe cases may require medication. In such cases, medication is been successfully used to treat anxiety disorders in children is available.

In the case of a child is not compatible with either drug commonly prescribed for adults, doctors may prescribe medications such as selective reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs serotonin.

2. Prescription Drugs commonly

In cases where drugs prescribed for a child, the National Institute of Mental Health recommends the use of these drugs that have proved be very effective as anti-anxiety medication for children.

Anafranil is used in cases of ten year olds and above treat obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Luvox, an SSRI, is used in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder in cases of children eight years or more.
Tofranil is used for six years, usually to the problem of bedwetting.
Zoloft, an SSRI, has been used successfully in cases of children aged six and above to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder.

If a child does not respond favorably to anti-anxiety drugs, doctors will have to design the best combination of drugs that will support for the child. In many cases, medication is only used to provide relief of symptoms and help children cope with their problems by adopting some other form of therapy.
